Asian Cinevision's By Sherry Ha
July 15, 2005 I am not a Maggie Cheung film buff but a friend asked me to go see her and her newest film for the opening night of Asian Cinevision's annual Asian American Film Festival and out of curiosityI did. It was an interesting experience. First a word about the new Asia Society building on Park Ave. The reception was a glassed in room where you can see straight down the avenue with a nice view of the city. What Maggie and her latest film showed was a really good fusion of culture. She has not lost her identity. She said, 'I'm from Hong Kong. I am not going to be a Hollywood star even if I take part in Hollywood films." But that is coming from someone who was raised in England, is completely fluent in English - not to mention having been married to a French director and completely fluent in French. And speaking of that director, he was who directed the film we saw, Clean. It was the opposite of the usual Cheung film where she plays the elegant woman. In this she was a heroin addict and portrayed the complete opposite. It not only showed her in a different light, it showed how good of an actress she really is. She was presented with an award and did a Q & A after the film. Asked who she would like to work with - her answer was Johnny Depp. She answered all the questions - she didn't try to be discrete. The evening ended with a social of appetizers and drinks looking out
over Manhattan. An enjoyable evening after all.
