FAHSI MENTORS & INTERNSHIP TUTORS NEEDED

FAHSI'S KUYA-ATE PROGRAM SEEKS MENTORS

This fall, the Filipino American Human Services, Inc. (FAHSI), is sponsoring a Kuya-Ate (elder brother, elder sister) College Mentoring Program. Under this program, each middle and high school youth (from the ages of 12-18) will be paired with a qualified college or graduate student who will serve as a mentor for the duration of the program (October 2005 until May 2006).

Participating youth will take part in college preparation workshops, and receive information about scholarships, SAT preparatory courses, and tutoring programs. The purpose of this program is to promote awareness of identity and to encourage young people to pursue a college education, as well as to help them prepare for the emotional stresses involved with the transition to college life.

FAHSI is currently looking for eligible candidates to be Kuyas and Ates.

Requirements include:

*Current enrollment in a college or  is a college graduate.

*Has a positive attitude on identity awareness.

The Kuya-Ate Program was developed in response to concerns about Filipino American youth dropping out of school, lacking the motivation to pursue higher education, or simply unsure about his or her capabilites. Mentoring is widely recognized as an effective way of supporting and guiding the teens at this critical stage of their lives and such an experience has helped countless young people.

For more information, or to request an application form for the Kuta-Ate College Mentoring Program, please contact Rose Ubarra at (718) 883-1295 or by e-mail at roseubarra@fahsi.org, or visit our website at www.fahsi.org.
