Stony Brook
University Announces The Creation
Of Winter Session Program To
Start In January
"Three Credits in Three
Weeks"™
and Affordable Tuition Are Attractions
STONY BROOK, N.Y.,
September 12, 2005
"Stony Brook University today announced that it will
start a Winter Session program beginning in January, 2006. "Winter
Session will provide new intensive educational experiences on the main
campus, at Stony Brook Manhattan, and through Study Abroad programs,"
Provost Robert McGrath said. An advertising campaign heralding "Three
Credits in Three Weeks" will begin soon.
The cost for Winter Session will be
$181 per credit plus fees, a fraction of the cost for many competing
programs. Stony Brook already operates a highly successful Summer Session.
"The Winter Session should be
extremely attractive to our own students, students from other local
universities, and students who are heading home for the winter break,"
said Associate Provost Joseph Auner, who headed the effort to create the
new Winter Session program. "First, as a world class research university,
Stony Brook offers first rate courses. Second, Winter Session offers the
chance to focus intensively on a topic. Third, students can earn three
credits in three weeks to fulfill a requirement or pursue new interests.
And finally, our low tuition makes these wonderful courses a great value."
Stony Brook plans to offer about 20 courses in the first year of the
Winter Session. Classes will meet 12 times, for 3 hours 25 minutes each
day, meeting Tuesdays through Fridays. Winter Session 2006 begins January
3 and ends January 20.
Most courses will count for three
credits, while language and study abroad programs will be from four to six
credits. Course offerings will come from departments across the
university, including economics, sociology, history, philosophy, art,
music, and marine sciences.
Stony Brook anticipates a first-year
enrollment of 500-600 students. In addition, the university is integrating
registration for the Winter Session with its registration for the Spring
Semester. "This will provide students with greater flexibility and
coordination in planning their course schedules for the entire year,"
Auner said. "Winter Session offers students more options and some
exciting new choices." Open enrollment will begin Wednesday, November 16.
Enrollments will be limited in the first year, so students should register
early.
