SUNY Board Takes Step
Forward For Immediate Release: Tuesday Sept. 20, 2005 Albany: "The State University of New York Board of Trustees today authorized the State University chancellor to take the necessary and appropriate steps to acquire the Southampton Campus of Long Island University." "The State University of New York can now enter into serious negotiations to acquire the Southampton Campus of Long Island University," said State University Board Chairman Thomas F. Egan. "The strong support for this endeavor from the state Legislature, from the Stony Brook Council, Stony Brook President Shirley Kenny and Acting Chancellor John Ryan were important considerations for the Board when making this important decision." "The work to try to acquire the Southampton Campus now begins in earnest," said Acting Chancellor John R. Ryan. "Serious negotiations lie before us, but I am very pleased about the opportunities to strengthen the academic programs, associated research and public service at Stony Brook." In the fall 2004, Long Island University and the State University of New York at Stony Brook met to discuss the Southampton College undergraduate marine science degree program, the only such program in the state. At LIU's request and with its support, Stony Brook University applied to the New York State Education Department for transfer of LIU's marine biology Bachelor of Science program. SED approved the transfer in March 2005, whereupon LIU advised its student candidates that the marine science degree would now be available under Stony Brook University auspices. The property available for purchase consists of 42 buildings on approximately 81 acres of land at the eastern end of Long Island. The buildings are laid out on meandering asphalt paths sheltered by mature cedar trees. The academic facilities consist of several art studio buildings, classroom and library buildings and a laboratory building; the marine sciences facilities are one-story structures with ocean access. The Education Law authorizes State University Trustees to purchase land in the name of the People of the State of New York for purposes consistent with the University's education, research, public service and health care mission. To this end, the Legislature has dedicated thirty-five million dollars in the enacted 2005-06 capital appropriations bill to enable Stony Brook University to acquire the Southampton College campus. The State University of New York is the largest comprehensive university system in the United States, educating more than 413,000 students in 6,688 degree and certificate programs on 64 campuses. President Shirley Strum Kenny "This is an
exciting prospect for SUNY, for Stony Brook, and for the people of the
East End, and it would not have been possible without the support of
the Chancellor and the Board of Trustees. By making a commitment to
purchase the Southampton College property, they have recognized the
extraordinary potential of the Southampton campus and the vital role it
can continue to play in the region. With a strong focus on academic
programs related to the environment and sustainability, Stony
Brook Southampton will enable undergraduates to explore some of the most
important issues of the 21st century." |
