Sunday, November 6, 2005
1 p.m. to 6 p.m.
This symposium is free and open to the public.
It will also be held in Houston and Los Angeles on successive Sundays.
The city of Vijayanagara "seemed to me as large as Rome, and very
beautiful; the best provided city in the world." - Domingo Paes,
Portuguese visitor in the 1520s.
The vibrant and prosperous Vijayanagara Empire (1336-1565) dominated
South India. It was a golden age of South Indian culture in art,
architecture, trade, learning, and literature, incorporating the
cross-currents of Hindu, Muslim, Portuguese, Kannada, Telugu, and
Tamil cultures.
In this multimedia symposium, renowned archeologists, art historians, and
linguists present a unique, integrated, three dimensional picture of
Vijayanagara as the upholder, assimilator and disseminator of artistic,
religious, literary, social and political traditions in South India.
Teachers and students of visual and performing arts, and everyone
interested in knowing about the history, religion, literature and arts of
India will find this symposium compelling and
valuable.
Enjoy this feast to the mind eyes and ears with your
friends.
