Well, maybe the reason Charles Wang
is the only Asian American NHL owner is because hockey is not
exactly an Asian sport, an Asian American sport, even an any
American sport except for those from states and provinces where
winters are real. And given that SBU's Asian American population
is from the city, what few hockey fans there are - are
definitely Rangers fans. So this night out on April 11th was interesting to
say the least.
There was only one Islanders fan, so
only one person was elated they beat the Rangers. The few others
who knew anything at all about hockey were Rangers fans, so you
know how they felt.

For the rest of us... well, let's
just say it was interesting to go once but I would never pay $45
to sit so high up you need to watch the TV screen, and paying
more would definitely never happen. Good seats top $100.
If you don't understand the game you
are clueless as to why they keep stopping for players to be taken off the ice
for penalties like 'icing'. What does icing mean on an ice rink? They need to
give out free little 'Hockey for Dummies' cheat sheets.
But if you like fighting it is definitely a sport where that seems to happen.
Maybe its only with extreme rivals like the Islanders and Rangers, but from
the crowd's enthusiasm every time it happened, it seems like its an expected
part of the show.
And the fans. We were by two guys who were so drunk one was running his
fingers through the hair of the middle-aged, very proper guy in front of him
until they were finally thrown out by security. The guy in the photo album,
see link below, the one labeled NOT AA2, kept calling some no show guy from
Stony Brook "gay" every two minutes and screaming that Islander's goalie
DiPietro "suc-ed." But at least they had a good sense of humor. Actually, they
were more entertaining than the game we didn't understand.
Please Mr. Wang, forget the Nassau Coliseum. I am not a sports
person period but build out in Suffolk and give future alumni at Stony Brook a
basketball team. Check out the campus courts and you will see it is def the
APA student game of choice. Then at least a NY Knicks vs. LI Lights (assuming
a Lighthouse plan will sail out there) will be worth the big bucks.
The next [AA]2 outing, being put together by Charles Kang, will be Mets vs.
Yankees at Shea. At least for that rivalry the seats are only $15. Stay tuned.
