SBU GRADUATION

Stony Brook University graduation is always wonderful for those graduating no matter what the circumstances, though Friday graduations for many Asian students of immigrant parents is often less so because Mom and Dad cannot take the day off for the big event they worked so hard to help finance. On Thursday, 5/17, among the many students getting Ph.D.'s were Bin Tang and Yutian (Kate) Chen, pictured above with Dean of the Graduate School Lawrence Martin. They were the first grad students to get married in the Wang Center. Bin had been GSO President at the grand opening of Wang and was involved in planning the student performances.

The next day seniors and Masters students at the main ceremony were greeted by buckets of rain but afterwards, Huy Huynh, retiring SBU AA E-Zine Editor-in-Chief, handed out [AA]2 Leadership Awards to a packed room of new alumni and their glowing parents, siblings, and friends. Pictured above with her family, Jenny Mai, President of CASB, was given [AA]2's first monetary award, donated by SBU [AA]2 alumni from previous years, for her tremendous efforts as a student leader. Check out the AAJ Spring 2007 link below for a great article written about Jenny by her siblings, Winnie and Denny Mai, both SBU students too. For the names of Leadership Award recipients click HERE. Check out the PHOTO GALLERY too.

SAVE EARTH

This year China will overtake the USA as the largest producer of greenhouse gases that cause global warming. These two countries, one the richest and most powerful, the other on its way to becoming that, are refusing mandatory caps on greenhouse emissions. As seen by the failure of the Kyoto Protocol, voluntary caps will be a disaster with large parts of low lying cities like Bombay, New York, and Shanghai going underwater as sea levels rise, billions of people displaced, and severe droughts, water shortages, and decreased food supplies leading to famine. The most important thing you can do is to let all the leaders of your country know that you support mandatory caps even if it makes your life harder, and that they will go down in history as idiots if they do not support them. Then click Climate Connections above for the latest news from NPR and National Geographic about what else YOU can do to Save the Earth!
