SPECIAL ISSUE
INSTITUTIONAL RACISM AT SBU

Normally the last issue each May of the AA E-Zine and SBU AA E-Zine looks like this - click here - the names of graduating student leaders in Asian & Asian American clubs and organizations and Asian American student leaders in other orgs - and the Awards Ceremony that honors them in front of their family and friends for all their efforts to make SBU a great place. But this year, which would have been the 15th Annual Awards, alumni are instead writing President Stanley asking him to overrule the decree of one woman, Acting Director of Conferences Ann Brody, who refused to allow the Ceremony as originally planned, falsely claiming it would make students choose between the Awards Ceremony or their Department Ceremony if theirs was in the afternoon, not the morning. As you can read in the 2009 article below, that absolutely does not happen!
She would only allow it on another day. It was explained to her that due to the financial situation of many immigrant parents who could not afford to take an additional day off work and who live in the city without access to a car, moving it would mean many parents could not attend. She did not care.

SBU's tradition of awards ceremonies prior to graduation is based on a white LI suburban car culture that no longer represents the demographics of the campus. Not taking into account the current student body is a classic case of institutional racism.
Alumni who attended past ceremonies pleaded with President Stanley. He has yet to respond. At the link below, read some of their poignant memories of past ceremonies.

Rather than deny this years graduates their place of honor on the Zine, the SBU AA E-Zine is for them. They will still get their award from the Wang Center architect, P.H. Tuan, and the other special guests. The difference is that their reception will be in Starbucks overflow space with hors d'oeuvres, desserts and beverages - plus traditional cake cutting - rather than catered lunch. We decided it wasn't food that made the event special - it was hearing the applause of their family and friends, having their photo taken with the guests, and most of all seeing the pride on their parent's faces.
To deny this years graduates their moment in the spotlight was to let racism win.
