History and Mission

ASA, Asian Students Alliance at Stony Brook University, was created in the 1994-95 academic year by a group of Asian American students who wanted to celebrate the cultural and ethnic aspects of their lives as pan-Asian Americans, distinct from the Asian clubs which celebrated only one nationality. This also gave students whose heritage was from smaller Asian countries an Asian-interest club to belong to.

ASA strives to provide a community of fellowship and network for Asians and Asian Americans within and outside of ASA. Members of ASA work together to develop educational, social and cultural models to foster awareness for the Asian and Asian American communities on campus.

In the Fall of 1995 ASA created Asia Night, later known as Asian Night, which has gone on to become the largest annual pan-Asian American event on campus with performances by ASA and many other campus clubs as well as outside performers. Each year ASA holds events such as Ramen Night and the Nations of Asia Semiformal, and co-sponsors events with other clubs. An expanded history of ASA is here.
